Doin’ Time
The Pharcyde
I’m sure most of you if not all of you have heard the song “Doin’ Time” by Sublime, but how many of you have heard the hip hop remix featuring the tongue-in-cheek rap group The Pharcyde? Probably not a lot of you unless you own the What I Got… EP. It’s the only Sublime CD I own, surprisingly enough, and it contains nothing but old tracks, a censored version of “What I Got” and the hip hop version of “Doin’ Time.” Honestly, that remix is the only good thing about the album. The censored version of “What I Got” is… well… censored and is therefore not as good. And you’re better off just getting Sublime’s full albums if you want the other songs from the EP. I don’t even know what compelled me to buy it in the first place. Oh well, at least I got a cool remix out of it.
Anyway, the hip hop remix of “Doin’ Time” just basically takes the original tune, adds some extra percussion, and replaces Brad Nowell’s verses with some rhymes thrown down by the Pharcyde. There is a little bit of censorship (some of the words are replaced by clicking noises). Who knows why they did that, but overall it’s a really fun song. I actually heard this remix before I ever heard the original version of “Doin’ Time” so I think I actually like this version a little bit better because I got used to it before I got used to the original song. Maybe you other listeners and hardcore Sublime fans might have different opinions.
