Rock Covers
The first item up today is very strange indeed, but very funny and worth a listen. It’s from Six Feet Under’s album Graveyard Classics, which is filled with death metal covers of songs that were influential to the heavy metal genre. Included is a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”. Yes, a death metal cover of “Purple Haze”. When you first hear the song you’ll either look like a stunned fish or just be laughing uproariously. And the cover remains faithful to the original in one very important way: the lead vocalist still sounds like he’s saying, “Excuse me while I kiss this guy.”
Purchase Graveyard Classics by Six Feet Under
Straying away from the outright disturbing, let’s move right along to another cover done by a rap-rock band called Zebrahead. They released a promo for their 2000 release Playmate of the Year in which they included a cover of the Spice Girls hit “Wannabe”. Zebrahead’s version converts the original Spice Girls tune to blazing guitars and fast percussion while upping the tempo by a considerable degree. What do you get in the end? A rockin’ party song.
Purchase Waste of Mind by Zebrahead
Yeah, I know the cover of “Wannabe” was promoting Playmate of the Year, but Waste of Mind is a MUCH better album and is definitely a better buy. Whatcha think about that? Now you know how I feel.
